Black Screen

Display a steady black field to inspect dark-screen behavior or create a dark background. This changes the image, not the power state of your display.

Ready.

What you can use a black screen for

A full black screen is a simple reference image, useful when a photograph or video makes a display problem difficult to describe. This page sends RGB 0, 0, 0 across the test field. It does not switch off the display, change its hardware brightness or measure emitted light. What you see still depends on the panel, room lighting and display settings.

Press “Open full black screen” to expand the field. Select a timer before starting if you want fullscreen to end after 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Leave it off for manual control. The timer closes the test; it does not put the computer to sleep, lock the phone or power down a TV. Browser suspension may delay its response, so it is not a precise alarm.

Choose “Hide cursor” to remove the pointer from the field. Escape or the small Exit button returns to the page. A brief hint explains the controls, then fades. Native fullscreen hides the surrounding page, including advertisements; devices without that feature use an expanded browser view, where browser chrome may remain visible.

You can use the field as a dark background at night or to look for bright specks. Reflections and surface dust sometimes show against black, but room light is still needed to see the surface. Do not wipe a powered screen just because the page looks dark: follow the cleaning procedure for the actual device.

Check backlight bleed and IPS glow

For an LCD, set normal viewing brightness, dim distracting lights and sit centered at your usual distance. Look for broad bright areas near edges and corners. Record whether they are visible in ordinary dark content as well as on this artificial field. Maximum brightness in complete darkness can make small differences appear much more dramatic.

Move your head slightly without pressing the panel or its frame. A corner glow that changes with viewing position may involve IPS glow or other viewing-angle behavior. A fixed edge patch may need a different description, and both effects can coexist. A black browser image alone cannot identify the cause or decide whether a screen meets its manufacturer's tolerances.

Use the Backlight Bleed Test to compare near-black fields too. Keep your seat, brightness and room light consistent. If taking photographs, avoid automatic exposure changes that brighten one picture more than another. For a return or support request, explain what distracts you during normal use rather than relying only on a long-exposure photo.

OLED true black check

OLED pixels emit their own light and can stop emitting for black content. In a dark room, the black field may therefore become difficult to distinguish from the surrounding unlit area. This is a useful observation, not a certificate of zero luminance: a browser cannot measure black level or verify every part of the signal path.

Remove overlays and compare with gray in the White Screen tool. A bright speck on black can be a stuck pixel, dust or a reflection. A dead pixel that remains dark is usually easier to notice on white or another bright color. Persistent logos may be invisible on absolute black, so inspect several fields in the Burn-In Test.

Black screen vs turning the display off

Displaying black is not the same as turning the screen off. An LCD can keep its backlight active, and the browser and device continue operating. OLED may use less panel power for dark content than for bright content, but total battery savings depend on the device and what else is running. This page does not measure energy use.

For an unattended device, use its screen-off or sleep settings. This tool does not deliberately prevent sleep, silence notifications or secure the device. If you need to inspect a phone's entire panel, remember that its browser may retain navigation bars. Never disable supported protection features or use unsupported workarounds just to remove browser controls.

FAQ

Does a black screen save battery on OLED?

It can reduce panel power compared with bright content because OLED pixels emit their own light. Total savings depend on the device and workload. Turning an unused display off is a more direct way to avoid unnecessary display activity.

Can a black screen show dead pixels?

It can reveal some bright stuck pixels, but a dead pixel that stays dark can blend into black. Compare white, gray and primary colors for a useful dead-pixel check.

Why does black look gray on my monitor?

LCD backlighting, viewing angle, reflections, brightness and signal settings can affect black appearance. This page cannot isolate the cause; compare normal content and the manufacturer's setup guidance.

Does the timer turn my screen off?

No. It exits this test after the selected interval while the browser remains open. Use the device's sleep or screen-off settings if you want the display to turn off.

Are there ads in fullscreen?

No advertisement is placed inside the fullscreen test element. The page surrounding it keeps the site's usual layout, and browser controls may remain on devices without native fullscreen support.
